President Obama has stated that he wants to reform both the healthcare and Medicare systems during the course of his administration. He has asked that congress move rapidly to produce a detailed plan to produce real reform for American healthcare. During his campaign, President Obama sent a letter to the American Chiropractic Association stating his support for chiropractic, that his healthcare plan will prioritize preventive care and that chiropractors will play an integral role in this effort.
Chiropractic can play a substanial role in healthcare reform. The current healthcare system has numerous flaws and for real reform to occur, we must embrace a new philosophy. We must shift away from the sickness model where we only see the doctor when we are experiencing pain and symptoms, at which point illness has already struck, to living a more a wellness-based lifestyle that includes supportive chiropractic care to prevent illness from occurring in the first place. A preventive and wellness-based model is a more effective, as well as more cost-effective, healthcare model.
