The Many Benefits of Water

With the heat that seems to never go away this summer, I felt this month was a good time to talk about the benefits of drinking water. When it's hot outside or when we're sick, the one phrase we always remember from our mothers is "make sure you drink plenty of fluids". Well as research has shown to no surprise, moms every where were right!

Water is absolutely essential to our body's survival. A person can live for up to a month without food, but only a week without water! In addition to keeping our bodies properly hydrated, water has shown to be beneficial to our health in numerous ways. Our bodies are made up of roughly 60% water and depend on us being properly hydrated to carry out its normal functions at optimal capacity.

Being properly hydrated helps our bodies in the following ways:

Digestion and Circulation - The cells in our bodies need water. Water aides in the digestion process and is the primary medium for transporting all nutrients in the body.

Detoxification - Proper hydration helps flush out toxins, waste products and bacteria from the body that can cause disease if left to linger in our bodies.

Reduces Joint Pain and Headaches - Dehydration is a common cause of joint pains, muscle soreness and headaches. Water helps keep your muscles, joints, ligaments and tendons, lubricated and hydrated.

Improved Energy Levels and Organ System Function - If our bodies lack water, your heart works harder to pump blood to the rest of the body and your other organ systems will be taxed carrying out their normal functions as well. This overload depletes energy, which can lead to fatigue and an overall decrease in your body's function.

Weight Loss and Fat Loss - Water helps maintain a proper body weight, increases your metabolism, supresses your appetite and helps your body flush the byproducts of fat breakdown.

Healthier Skin - Water naturally moisturizes the skin, giving it a healthy appearance.

So now that you know the many ways that water can help you, be sure to keep your body properly hydrated with plenty of water. Not just for the remainder of the summer, but from now on!
